San Francesco della Vigna is the northern area of Castello, the eastern part of Venice, from San Marco toward east, a less known part of Venice, but not minor for its beauty and history. The San Francesco Church, that gives the name to the quarter, is its heart. It was projected by Jacopo Sansovino, while its classic façade was designed by Andrea Palladio, it has lots of paintings and sculptures (Paolo Veronese, Giovanni Bellini, Antonio da Negroponte) and a wonderful cloister, an ideal place to rest , away from the “hustle and bustle” of the town centre, in the shade of cypress trees. Each year in the week of 13th June, in the adjiacent "Campo", the traditional Sant'Antonio holiday takes place with music, dance and venetian culinary specialities served open air. In the nearby Campo della Celestia, Campo Santa Ternita, Capo due Pozzi, meeting points for children to play and for old people to talk, the tourist can experience moments of the ancient venetian popular life and atmosphere. Corte dea Vida e Ramo dea Vida (vineyard) remind us of the time when all the area of San Francesco was cultivated with vines. Salizada San Francesco, where Casa dei Bombardieri faces, is the commercial heart of the quarter, with all first need shops. The Confraternita dei Bombardieri, the artificers who in the nearby Arsenale built the bombs for the ships, also built this building in 1555. On the façade of the house, at the entrance to Sottoportego dei Bombardieri and behind in Calle dei Bombardieri, there are still 4 bas-reliefs showing Santa Barbara, their protectress. In 1598 they also ordered the construction of an altar in the Santa Maria Formosa Church with the altar-piece of Palma il Vecchio representing Santa Barbara. Important places of cultural and historical interest only a few minutes walk from San Francesco are: Eastwards: Southwards: Westwards: From Fondamenta Nuove (but also from Celestia stop) you can start a tour to the Islands of Murano and Burano, or to the Lido beach.
